Bill Gates with Paul Allen
When Bill met Paul Allen who was his senior at the Lakeside school, they realized their common enthusiasm and fascination for computers. The techie-duo together developed a computer program that could monitor the traffic patterns in Seattle, named it Traf-o-Data, and earned $20,000 for their successful efforts.
Bill Gates enrolled at Harvard University in the fall, after scoring 1590 out of 1600 in the SAT exams. Paul and Bill approached a small company in Albuquerque called Micro Instrumentation and Telemetry Systems. They claimed of developing BASIC software program that would run on their Altair computer. Later this program executed successfully at MITS and Bill Gates and Allen formed a partnership, which they named as Microsoft, a amalgamation of “micro-computer” and “software.”
It was during November 1980 that IBM was looking for software that would run their forthcoming personal computer (PC) and approached Microsoft. Bill Gates through his exceptional skills was successful in convincing them that he and his company could meet their requirements. The only concern was that Microsoft had not developed the basic operating system that would run on IBM’s new computers then. Unaffected by any hindrance, Bill Gates bought an operating system that was developed to run on computers similar to IBM’s PC. With this, Microsoft started rising globally with offices in Japan and Great Britain and is currently the world’s largest software marker in terms of revenue.
