Munna Bhai walks out free
#Cosmoread: The 56-year-old superstar, Sanjay Dutt, was arrested for the illegal possession of arms and ammunitions that were used in the 1993 Bombay terror attacks. It was the most unfortunate day in the history of the nation, when a series of thirteen bomb explosions happened in Bombay, taking the lives of over 350 innocent people and injuring over 1400 or more. He was arrested under the Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention Act) TADA. TADA was an anti-terrorism law that came into place between the year 1985 and 1995. This act lapsed in 1995. Under this act, Sanjay Dutt was charged for possessing a 9 mm pistol and an AK 56 assault rifle. It was further suspected that the actor was already aware of the blasts and that the blasts took place after he has bought weapons. The court discounted the charges and the TADA special court judge declared that he is not a terrorist.
On one side, the supporters of Sanjay Dutt claimed that his arrest was with a political motive, his critics clearly pointed out the fact that he had illegally gotten the deadly weapons from the gangsters who were also involved and charged in the 1993 serial blasts killing more than 250 people.
Markandey Katju, the former Supreme Court judge, also once stated that Sanjay Dutt should be pardoned on the grounds of the fact that his parents have done many good deeds. However, the Supreme Court ruled this argument and declared that the actor must fulfill the term that was awarded to him by the trial court based on the seriousness of the charges.
All through this trial, Sanjay Dutt claimed that he had no prior knowledge about the bomb blasts or the bomb plot and he only possessed the guns for protecting his family as he had received threats during the sectarian riots in Mumbai.
In 1993, after his arrest, the actor completed 16 moths imprisonment and he was again arrested in December 1995, after which he was released on bail in April 1997. This trial went on for long following which he was in jail since May 2013 to complete 42 months out of a total of five years of imprisonment. He finally completed his prison term on Feb 25, 2016.
Although a great actor with a huge fan following, he is indeed the most controversial Bollywood personality.
