Proton Pump Inhibitors: Alarming Dementia
#Cosmoread: Proton Pump inhibitors (PPIs) are a group of drugs employed to reduce the production of gastric acid. The acid
causes the formation of ulcers in the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum. The use of PPI’s not only prevents ulcers, but also heals any existing ulcers. Proton pump inhibitors are the most regularly agreed class of medication for the management and treatment of heartburn and acid-related disorders. They function by blocking the acid production site in the parietal cell of the stomach. There are bunches of PPIs obtainable in the United States, and many are in the process of development. There are a lot of structural and chemical similarities between the medications of PPIs, and there are moderately few comparisons of these drugs with each other. The commonly available Proton Pump inhibitors is omeprazole (Prilosec, Prilosec OTC), lansoprazole (Prevacid, Prevacid 24-Hour), dexlansoprazole (Dexilent, Kapidex), rabeprazole (Aciphex), pantoprazole (Protonix), esomeprazole (Nexium), andZegerid, a rapid release form of omeprazole.
German researchers concluded the PPI medications
Recently, studies by the German researchers have concluded that the PPI medications might raise the risk of dementia. The researcherscommittees have found that the senior or old aged patients, mostly around the age of 75 or older who are in the regular practice of taking these medications are exposed to 44 percent risk of increased dementia. Although the study is based on associations and not a solid cause and effect link, t
here are plans to conduct clinical trials to evaluate the association between the long-term PPI medication and increased risk of dementia in the elderly population. Until the time, the results of the trails have been validated, the people on these PPI medications are advised to follow the s guidelines for its prescriptions and avoid the inappropriate use through over-prescription.
According to a survey conducted in 2013, around 15 million Americans use the PPI prescriptions. The main concern is overusing this medication, which might expose them to increased risks of dementia. Not only Dementia, but the researchers have also found that PPI use might have an effect on a person’s reasoning and rational capability. In addition to that, PPIs also tends to affect the levels of critical proteins associated with Alzheimer’s disease namely amyloid beta and tau. The researchers have also mentioned that PPI use can also result in vitamin B12 deficiency, which might result in cognitive decline leading to an increased risk of cognitive impairment and developing Alzheimer’s.
These medications are taken as a pill or liquid form through mouth once or twice in a day. Sometimes, these medicines are available without any prescription, but it is always advisable that the doctor should be consulted if the medication is taken for more than two weeks owing to the risks that are involved. Correct identification of the diseases is also important before opting for any medication. Only when it is the case of acid reflux, PPI is to be used. There are some conditions in which the symptoms are similar to gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), the medical term used for persistent acid reflux that damages the esophagus in many conditions. According to doctors, many people on PPI medication don’t get better as they are not suffering from any acid problem.
