An innovative wound healing technology that can save limbs

#Cosmoread: The fight is on to save human organs: the rate of diabetes continues to increase, leg ulcers and chronic wounds that can come with the condition – and in severe cases can lead to amputations – remain a persistent problem.
To address this, medical professionals, human amniotic membrane, a wound dressing made of tissue found in the human placenta is turning to.
With this innovative approach to treat wounds, doctors use the wound would not heal existing treatments are another option for patients. The method is a substance that otherwise discarded as medical waste after birth would end uses.

When wounds do not heal

“The wound care community is relatively small,” Chris Liscio, Derma Sciences, a medium-sized Princeton, New Jersey, a company that makes dressing on amniotic membrane tissue regenerative product director. Most diabetic wound primary care physicians, or sometimes are treated by emergency doctors, he said.
Once set in ulcers, they can be difficult to heal, he said. People with such wounds, “is bad circulation, nerves are damaged and sometimes [the wound] continues to age – four years,” Ilic said.
Users can lead to bad consequences for patients. A 2007 study, published in the International Wound Journal, Rosalind Franklin University of Chicago researchers found that nearly half of the patients receiving a diabetes-related amputation would not be alive in five years. That is why death rates similar or worse than those of many common types of cancer.
For the most difficult wounds, the amniotic membrane really helps, Ilic said, especially those that have not responded to other treatments.
In a clinical trial, which Marietta, Georgia-based company MiMedx a membrane product tested, the researchers diabetes 2 and 20 centimeters (0.79 to 7.9 inches) from crossing with ulcers in 84 patients. Ulcers completely permeated the skin layers and was still open after one month. Researchers either membrane or conventional wound patients treated with care, and then to see if the wounds were at least 40 percent checked off within a month of treatment. Treating those with an amniotic membrane product, 62 percent met the benchmark, 32 percent who had received standard therapy, according to results published in 2014 in comparison.
The idea of using this membrane is not new. In 1910, Dr. John Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore JW Davis as a skin graft using tissue and found that it performed well tried. During the early part of the century, medical researchers continue to experiment with materials, and use it for eye surgery success.
Using transparent membrane for wound dressing is a fairly common practice continued until disease transmission concerns about interference. Membrane in the years after World War II was used less, Ilic said. Then in the 1980s and 1990s, AIDS and other blood-borne diseases caused by the rise of the membrane is to fall out of favor. However, within the last decade or so, researchers have developed ways to safely test and sterile dressings for use in membrane processes, Ilic said. Most membranes in ophthalmology as a biological dressing, is used today. Only within the last five years or so the experts use advanced amniotic membrane products have begun to treat diabetic wounds.
Many US companies Derma Sciences, MiMedx and in Columbia, Maryland with Osiris Therapeutics human amniotic membrane, make medical products. This membrane processes, each company, using proprietary methods is different. Liscio said generally use either cryogenically frozen or shelf, Derma Sciences’ version of the two versions of the finished product is.

While there are products on the market and can be employed by any potential doctor, currently is limited to specific wound care centers use.

Derived from human amniotic membrane tissue relatively free of any significant side effects when used in sheet form, Dr. Donald Fetterolf, MiMedx chief medical officer said. The downside of using amniotic membrane products that cost to cover a wound can be incredibly much. “They are different sizes, but the price easily can range from $ 4,000 to $ 400,” Liscio said. Amniotic tissue products for insurance coverage varies widely as well.

Liscio said he sees the fastest growing sector in the future. “Diabetes problem is not getting better,” he said. “If you delay or even an amputation can do to stop it, then the person could have a better quality of life.”
As for production, Ilic said he was confident of the lots will be available amniotic membrane. “The production is extremely cheap,” he said. “And the resources? The whole human race.”
